(Stillwater, OK April 21, 2009) -- Two teams of aerospace and mechanical engineering students from Oklahoma State University earned first and second place at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Design/Build/Fly International competition in Tucson, Ariz., last weekend. The teams build their own unmanned planes and prove their performance by flying them in three missions at the contest.
OSU Black took first place team honors and finished the competition by setting the fastest lap time, while OSU Orange was close enough behind to finish in second overall.
In the past 10 years the OSU teams, led by Dr. Andrew Arena Jr., L. Maciula Professor in Engineering, have won six first place awards and seven second place awards, and in four of these competitions, his teams have taken both first and second place.
“Dr. Arena has always attributed the success of his aerospace design-build-fly teams to the high quality and hard work of the students who participate. While this is certainly true, what he leaves unsaid is the strong, positive example he sets for his students and his own willingness to work as hard as the students to pull off such impressive results,” said Dr. Larry Hoberock, professor and head of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. “We are all inspired by his dedication, as well as that of the students on his teams.”
Jamey Jacob, associate professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, said the top finishes are further proof of the lofty status of OSU’s aerospace engineering program. “Due to the difficulty of the missions and the systems engineering going into the air vehicle integration, this puts our students and aerospace engineering program at the forefront of unmanned air vehicle and systems (UAV and UAS) research and development.”
