Kristopher Bradley, a first year graduate student at Oklahoma State University, has been awarded a pre-doctoral fellowship from the National Science Foundation. He is the first graduate student from OSU’s Psychology Department to ever receive this award. The fellowship provides a $30,000 annual stipend that can be used for up to three years of graduate study. It also provides $10,500 annual tuition allowance as well as funds for foreign travel. “This fellowship offers an amazing opportunity to fully concentrate on research topics related to the social processes involved in everyday decision-making,” said Bradley, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in experimental psychology. “The research that my adviser Dr. Shelia Kennison and I are conducting focuses on the implications that reminders of mortality can have on individuals, referred to as the ‘terror management theory.’” Kennison, who Bradley credits for motivating him to become involved in research and to apply for the award, said the fellowship will be a definite boost to a promising project. “The research that Kristopher and I are embarking on promises to make a real difference in the world. I am very proud to be his mentor.” Bradley also credits several individuals in the psychology department for helping him obtain the fellowship, including Dr. John Chaney, Dr. Jennifer Byrd-Craven, Dr. Charles Abramson, Dr. Ed Burkley, and Patricia Alexander.
Bradley, a native of Hennessey, received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from OSU in 2008. OSU had a total of three NSF winners this year. Joining Bradley are undergraduates Cortney Timmons, who is from Ada and will be going to Colorado State University, and Lesa Heintzman, who is from Joelton, Tenn. and will attending Vanderbilt. |
