Students gather Scholarship Seekers

Today was the first day for OSU students to apply for study abroad scholarships. Nearly 200 students, some arriving as early as 5 a.m., lined up for the $500-$1,000 scholarships.

Study abroad programs range from summer classes to full year programs all over the world.

  • Digital media expert to speak on “The 4 Winners Marketplace”
    An expert on change in the media marketplace and digital media, Andrew W. Thornhill, will present “The 4 Winners Marketplace” on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 7–9 p.m. in room 101 of the Paul Miller Building. Thornhill, founder of The Digital Television Report, will address research, public policy, the consumer and the media industry, including the upcoming government-mandated switch from analog to digital television.     Women in Engineering, Architecture & Technology  is hosting the Mercury 13 Seminar “Women Who Reached for the Stars,” Thursday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m. in room 106 of the Noble Research Center.     “Graphic Journaling” to be published this week
    Architecture professor Mohd Bilbeisi’s new book “Graphic Journaling” will be published and available by the end of the week. The book is the only one of its kind to provide a critical academic view of the act of graphic journaling as an analytical and creative tool. The book is the summary of twenty years of research in the field of graphic communication and analysis which took Bilbeisi to more than 14 countries and afforded him interactions with hundreds of students throughout the world.     Brown Bag Series to start with Ketterer
    Associate Professor Stan Ketterer will discuss the Elaboration Model from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in Room 208 of the Paul Miller Building as part of the Brown Bag Series in Mass Communication Research. Ketterer will discuss “Using the Elaboration Model to Explore Relationships and Learn Advanced Statistics.” Bring your lunch and participate in the discussion.     Dallas Brass Quintet to perform Saturday
    The Department of Music will present the Dallas Brass Quintet in concert on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door. The concert is part of the OSU “Brass Day” which will bring high school students on to campus for a day of instruction by the OSU brass faculty and the Dallas Brass.     Public invited to legislative reception
    The public is invited to a legislative reception tomorrow (Thursday, Jan. 22) in the auditorium of the Stillwater Public Library (1107 S. Duck St.) from 5 to 7 p.m. State legislators including Representatives Lee Denney and Cory Williams and Senator Jim Halligan have been invited along with school board members, the school superintendent, county commissioners and officials as well as the city council and city management team.     Series explores moving organizations from good to great
    Business and government professionals are encouraged to attend “Leadership: Good to Great” on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the CREC Training Center, 3304 S. Boomer Road in Stillwater. The seminar, featuring Ken Eastman, head of the OSU Department of Management in the Spears School of Business, is based on a book by Jim Collins titled “Good to Great,” which explores how to take organizations to greatness. The seminar is part of the LeadershipSource Professional Development Program. For more information, click here.

    Students: consider counseling in a group setting
    The OSU Student Counseling Center is offering several counseling group options for OSU and NOC-Stillwater students this semester. Counseling in a group setting can offer several advantages. The specific groups include anger management, biofeedback/stress management, general therapy, self-esteem, and undergraduate student support.     Bluegrass concert this weekend
    A who's who of bluegrass musicians is coming to the City of Stillwater Community Center (315 W. 8th Ave.) for a concert called “Pickin' A Bluegrass All-Start Jam,” starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, as part of the 2008-09 Performing Arts Series. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students. A bluegrass workshop will be held before the concert for mandolin, resophonic guitar and songwriters for an additional fee. Tickets may be purchased online at www.tickets.stillwater.org or at the box office in the City of Stillwater Community Center (corner of 8th and Duck Streets).

    Here's a quick and healthy hummus (chickpeas) recipe for your next social event or party. Blend or food process chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans) and 1/4 cup reserved liquid from the chickpeas, two tablespoons lemon juice and two tablespoons minced garlic. Spread onto a whole-wheat pita and top with shredded carrots, sliced olives, grilled eggplant, and roasted red peppers for a delicious and healthy appetizer, snack or light meal.
