Staff Appreciation Day Chow Down

Thousands of OSU employees were treated to a free lunch Wednesday during Staff Appreciation Day.  The lunch was moved from Willard lawn into the Student Union Ballroom due to weather. In addition to the meal, there were several information booths, door prizes and two raffle drawings.  Health screenings were also available.  The event is sponsored by the OSU Staff Advisory Council, OSU Administration and the OSU Foundation.

  • President’s Leadership and Service Recognition Set for next Wednesday
    Students, faculty and staff of Oklahoma State University will be recognized for outstanding leadership and service during the annual President’s Leadership and Service Recognition Reception, set Wednesday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium. OSU President Burns Hargis and Kent Sampson, director of Campus Life, will welcome the recipients and guests. A reception will be held in the Atrium following the ceremony.

    ISO elections set, apply now
    Elections for a position on the International Student Organization’s leadership committee will be held Thursday, April 14, in Student Union room 270 from 6 to 8 p.m. Applications are available online by clicking here. To run for election to a position, you must fill out an application form and drop it in the application box at ISO in the basement of the Student Union by 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 8.     CEO Day is April 7 at OSU
    Three chief executive officers will visit with OSU students and participate in a public forum on "Keys to Success in the Current Economy” from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in the Student Union Theater. The forum is part of the eighth annual Spears School of Business CEO Day and will feature Keith Geary, chairman, president and CEO of Capital West Securities, Inc.; Steve Irby, president and founder of Stillwater Designs in; and Terry London, president of London Broadcasting Co.     Spring Family Weekend at OSU

    The OSU Office of Parent and Family Relations will host Spring Family Weekend and the 2nd Annual Mom’s Day Craft Fair, this Saturday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium on the OSU Stillwater campus.  Other events such as an evening street party in downtown Stillwater, campus tours, Cowboy baseball, concerts, Africa Night, and Spring Sing are also planned.     Spring Sing to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer
    This year’s Spring Sing “Sweet Emotion” is scheduled for this Saturday, April 4, at 5:30 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Each group involved must incorporate an Aerosmith song into their performance. Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Chi-O Clock and the Student Union Hub through April 3. Tickets may also be purchased at the door the day of the performance for $12. All proceeds from Spring Sing will benefit the OSU Coaches vs. Cancer Campaign. Since 2005, Spring Sing has donated over $30,000 to the American Cancer Society through OSU Coaches vs. Cancer.  

    Flame and Fortune: A Brief History of Fire in America
    Dr. Stephen Pyne will offer “Flame and Fortune: A Brief History of Fire in America” on Friday, April 10,  at 2 p.m. in 101 Agriculture Hall. Pyne, Regent’s Professor of Environmental History at Arizona State University, teaches courses on wildland fire and is the author of 20 books, including the Cycle of Fire suite of books which survey the global history of wildland fire. His unique and extensive knowledge has been enhanced by 18 fire seasons spent with the National Park Service.     Legislative leader and alum to deliver keynote at OSU-Tulsa graduation
    Oklahoma House Speaker Chris Benge will serve as the keynote speaker for OSU-Tulsa’s graduation ceremony on Monday, May 11, at 7 p.m. in The Pavilion at Expo Square. Benge, who graduated from OSU-Tulsa in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, will return for the second anniversary of his own graduation to address the university’s 2009 graduates. A Tulsa native, he worked for 17 years at his family-owned painting and construction business. Benge was first elected to the State Legislature in 1998. For more click here.  

    OSU-OKC offers special scholarship
    In an effort to provide financial relief for college students, OSU-Oklahoma City has launched a Buy 2-Get 1 Free scholarship program. Students who commit to two consecutive semesters get their third semester totally free. Full- or part-time students qualify for the scholarship, which covers 100 percent of the cost of tuition, fees, required books and materials for their third consecutive semester.     Barbecued meat judging class set, register now
    The Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center at OSU is hosting a class to teach participants how to judge barbecued meats. The event will take place Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the second floor of the FAPC. Ed Roith of the Kansas City Barbeque Society will teach the class, which is $60 for KCBS members and $85 for non-members.     City invites cell phone users to sign up for emergency notifications
    OSU students are among those being encouraged to make sure their cell phone numbers are registered in the Payne County CodeRED systems, so they can receive emergency notifications. Required information includes first and last name, street address and primary phone number. The information supplied will only be used for emergency notification purposes. Land line residential customers are already in the system. Go to stillwater.org/seccc to register. Those who do not have Internet access, may call the Emergency Management Office at (405) 372-7484.

    Heritage week kicks-off with pageant on Saturday
    The Miss American Indian OSU pageant will be this Saturday, April 4, at 2 p.m. in the Student Union ballroom, tickets are $4. Heritage events next week include: Indian Taco sale Monday during lunch - Chi O clock; Native Spirituality Night at 7 p.m. Monday -SU exhibit room 415; Cultural Leadership Night Tuesday starting at 7 p.m. - SU Theater; Native stickball Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. - OSU soccer fields; Native Voices Art Show Thursday 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  - SU #290 (Suite 1600); Native American Awards Banquet Thursday  7 p.m. - Oklahoma Room, SU.

    Osteopathic Scrub Run on Saturday
    The OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine will present the Osteopathic Scrub Run to support Lifeshare on Saturday. April 4, at the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine campus on the corner of W. 17th St. and Southwest Blvd. in Tulsa. There will be three races, a 5K starting at 8 a.m.; 10K at 9:15 a.m. and the one mile fun run starting at 9:20. Run one or run all the events. All races are walker friendly.     Film on growing privatization of water set for Monday
    “Flow” a film about the growing privatization of water will be shown on Monday, April 6, from 7 – 9 p.m. in the OSU Noble Research Center, room 207. It is the last in the “Is Our Glass Half Empty?” film series offered by the Oklahoma Water Resources Research Institute at OSU and the OSU Environmental Science Club.     Golf expo at OSU
    OSU Leisure Studies is hosting a Play Golf America University Golf Expo on the OSU Library lawn on Tuesday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come participate in activities such as golf lessons with pros, caddy obstacle course or play a round of miniature golf. For more on PGAU, click here.

    OSU to host architects for lecture
    The OSU Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students will host a lecture by Hans Butzer and his partner Jeremy Gardner of Butzer Gardner titled “Despite the Current Economy” on Thursday, April 9, at 5:30 p.m. in EN 108. Both speakers are architects from Oklahoma City. Butzer is the designer of the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial. Their Web site is www.butzergardner.com, the lecture is free and open to the public.     Entry forms available for charity basketball tournament
    Junior Greek Life will be hosting the annual Scott Carter Basketball Tournament Sunday, April 19, starting around noon in the Colvin Annex. The tournament will include two brackets: men and women, and is a five-on-five set up.  Entry forms are available in 060 Student Union and are due Thursday, April 9, at 060 SU.     Wheelchair Basketball Bash coming
    The 7th OSU Wheelchair Basketball Bash is set for Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena as an All-Star team of OSU Varsity Cowboys and Cowgirls play the OSU Spokes, the Wheelchair Basketball team.     Delicious seafood dishes made easy – Heart Healthy Cooking Demo
    Join professional Chef Lisa Becklund as she shares her recipes bursting with flavor and good for the heart at the OSU Seretean Wellness Center for a Heart Healthy Cooking Demonstration, Thursday, April 16, from noon – 1 p.m.  The $20 registration fee includes the demonstration, recipes, and taste testing of each meal.     Can you picture sinking a tricky putt when you have the caffeine jitters? Improve your golf game by limiting alcohol and caffeine. These substances can negatively affect your play. Alcohol reduces coordination and caffeine can over stimulate you when you need to be calm. Drink plenty of water instead to stay well hydrated and delay premature fatigue.
