OSU commencement ceremonies set Friday and Saturday in Stillwater
Nearly 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students will be awarded degrees at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater on May 7-8. Three undergraduate ceremonies are set for Saturday, May 8, all in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Master’s degree and doctoral degree recipients will be recognized at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 7, in Gallagher-Iba Arena, with a reception immediately following the commencement ceremony. A hooding ceremony for graduates of the OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Gallagher-Iba Arena. For complete details, click here.
Weiser and Payton named to interim positions at OSU
OSU has announced the appointments of Dr. Mark Weiser as interim associate vice president for international studies and outreach and Dr. Mark Payton as interim dean of the graduate college. Weiser previously served as associate dean and professor of management information systems in the Spears School of Business. Payton served as associate dean of the OSU Graduate College and is a professor of statistics. For more details, click here.
OSU students place third at Collegiate Cyber-Defense Competition
A team of eight OSU students recently demonstrated their ability to successfully battle cyber thieves and earned third place at a cyber defense skills competition. OSU students Andrew Fagan, Tahsin Rahmah, Rachel Dunlap, Derek Wendler, Trae Robrock, Kyle Beverly, Tyler Bell and Robb Wise applied their cyber defense knowledge at the southwest regional Collegiate Cyber-Defense Competition held at Texas A&M University. OSU’s women’s lacrosse club ends season with victory
The OSU women’s lacrosse club got a come-from-behind victory over Creighton University in the last game of the season played in Kirksville, Mo. OSU scored seven unanswered goals in the final nine minutes of play to win 13-10 and end the season with a 5-6 record. Jesi Lay was top scorer in the game, with eight goals (a club record). Samatha Skinner served as president for the spring semester. Volunteer coach Tom Kusmic, professor NREM, is pictured presenting Lay with the game ball.
OSU College of Arts & Sciences honors natural gas executive
Vaughn O. Vennerberg II, the president of one of the largest producers of natural gas in the United States, was recently recognized as 2010 Distinguished Alumnus for the College of Arts & Sciences at OSU. Vennerberg, a 1976 psychology graduate, is president and director of Fort Worth, Texas-based XTO Energy Inc. He served as keynote speaker at the college’s honors and awards banquet where more than 200 students were recognized for their achievements. Click here to read more.

Students invited for free pancakes and more on Stillwater campus this week
Late Night Café, an OSU Campus Life and Student Union tradition for more than 20 years, is open May 3-6 (now through Thursday) in the Student Union Food Court as a treat for students studying for final exams. The café will be open for free coffee at 7 p.m., with pancakes, soft drinks and coffee served from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. nightly. Cooks and servers will include faculty and staff from throughout the campus and community.
Library open 24-hours
The OSU Library continues its tradition of providing students a place to study during dead week and finals by remaining open 24-hours. The Edmon Low Library will remain open until Friday, May 7, at 8 p.m. Reference service times have also been extended to provide additional assistance to students. University Dining Services extends hours
University Dining Services will extend operating hours at two of its popular units during finals week. Students who need a boost of energy or a quick pick me up can find it at either Café Libro in the Edmon Low Library or Twenty Something in Kerr Drummond. Café Libro will be open Sunday from 5:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. and Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 a.m. Twenty Something will be open Sunday from 10 a.m. - 2:30 a.m. and Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. - 2:30 a.m.
Audition for membership in the Cowboy Marching Band
Auditions for the 2010 edition of the Cowboy Marching Band are underway and all students are encouraged to try out. The only requirement is that you be able to play a wind instrument. Correction: new title for Kirksey is associate vice president
The position title in last week’s announcement about the new leader of OSU Institutional Diversity, Dr. Jason F. Kirksey, was incorrect and should have read associate vice president. We regret the error. The new appointment is pending approval at the next regular meeting of the OSU/A&M Board of Regents. Kirksey has served as interim associate vice president for institutional diversity since April of 2009. For more details, click here.
Moving out? Stillwater offering free drop off for big items
OSU students are invited to drop off their bulk items at the Convenience Collection Center, 807 S. Perkins Road, through May 31 at no charge. The center provides area residents with a convenient, professionally staffed, drive-thru service for disposing of non-hazardous recyclable goods, household waste and green waste. During the transition from twice-a-week manual trash collection to blue cart collection, your neighborhood’s trash collection time may vary. Design, Housing and Merchandising degree students will be honored at the 2010 Student Showcase on Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8, in the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center. A reception is set for Friday, May 7, from 2 – 4 p.m. and the exhibit will be open from 9 – 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 8.
OSU-OKC to celebrate Cinco De Mayo
The OSU-OKC Hispanic Student Association will be celebrating Cinco De Mayo on Wednesday, May 5, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the second floor of the Student Commons Area. Festivities will include live Mariachis and Mexican food. The Hispanic Student Association uses this yearly event to spread their culture and promote diversity.
“Global Economy” is next forum topic at Stillwater Public Library
Why are national economies interdependent? That’s one of the important questions that Dr. Steve Miller plans to address on the topic of “Global Economy” during the Stillwater Global Affairs Forum on Thursday, May 6, starting at 7 p.m. at the public library (12th and Duck).
