STILLWATER, OKLA. – The Mexico Liaison Office at Oklahoma State University recently hosted a delegation of higher education administrators from Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEM), the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, on May 16th and 17th, 2006.  The UAEM President, Provost and Vice President, and various administrators from UAEM programs in business, research, and post-graduate studies came to OSU to tour the university, learn more about OSU’s educational and research opportunities, and discuss a strategic approach to further the relationship between OSU and UAEM.  The visit was the first to OSU by UAEM President Dr. José Martínez.

Delegation members met with OSU System CEO and President David Schmidly, and participated in meetings with OSU colleges of Arts and Sciences, Spears School of Business, and the Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.  They also toured the Business Incubator in the Center for Business Development at Meridian Technology Center.

The delegation’s visit strengthened the relationship between OSU and UAEM and will enhance student and faculty educational exchange opportunities, as well as business and research efforts, between Oklahoma and the State of Mexico.  UAEM is a public university with approximately 50,000 students on 11 campuses throughout Mexico, with a similar organizational structure to that of the OSU system.  The OSU Mexico Liaison Office is enthusiastic about the opportunities that lie ahead for OSU and UAEM.

The Mexico Liaison Office is a component of the School of International Studies under direction of the Office of International Education and Outreach.  The Office is charged with pursuing and supporting academic, cultural and business exchanges between the State of Mexico, the OSU system and Oklahoma. The primary goals of the liaison office include: increasing the numbers of Mexican nationals attending OSU; expanding teaching, research and outreach opportunities for OSU students, faculty and staff in Mexico; developing study abroad and other academic exchange programs with Mexico; promoting linkages with Mexico’s businesses and governmental agencies to provide exchanges, trade opportunities and economic development initiatives.  Since the Office was formally established in 2005, it has developed partnerships with eight universities in Mexico.  The U.S.-based Mexico Liaison Office is housed in the School of International Studies at the Wes Watkins Center on the OSU campus, while the Mexico-based Office will soon open in Puebla, Mexico with three satellite offices throughout the State of Mexico.

The mission of the School of International Studies is to provide a university-wide focus to expand international opportunities in instruction, research, and outreach for individuals and organizations seeking a greater understanding and involvement in international affairs.  The School is part of the International Education and Outreach unit, which helps carry out the University’s mission of providing educational programs and services beyond traditional campus boundaries.

The School of International Studies coordinates academic programs and opportunities with OSU colleges and departments system wide.  School components include the International Bureaus, English Language Institute, Study Abroad, a Peace Corps Recruiting Office, Fulbright Information Center, Mexico Liaison Office, Phi Beta Delta, and a Graduate Program offering a M.S. degree and Certificate in International Studies and the Master’s International Peace Corps degree.  More than 147 OSU faculty members participate in School activities.
