PRESIDENT, OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY AND OSU SYSTEM

Selection Criteria and Qualifications

Oklahoma State University and the OSU System seek a President who can lead the total organization to a position of preeminence in undergraduate and graduate learning, research, and public service.  The University and OSU System are hereafter referred to as OSU.

OSU seeks a President who is:

a person of extraordinary intellect, accomplishment, insight, and judgment who

  • has an earned doctorate/terminal degree or significant recognition, prestige, and credibility for intellectual achievement in his/her profession;
  • senses the dynamic implications of problem areas, thinking beyond problems to solutions;
  • understands critical issues and trends in higher education, including those that respect and uphold the mission and the evolving role of the modern comprehensive land-grant university;
  • understands and will nurture an academic environment that fosters creativity and scholarship;
  • will promote excellence in all programs and the recruitment and retention of outstanding talent from diverse intellectual, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  • will encourage creative and responsive approaches to developing a distinctive character for OSU;

a dynamic, articulate, and influential advocate who

  • understands the most important constituency of the University is its students;
  • communicates ideas in a clear and effective manner and who projects a positive image;
  • conveys persuasively a vision of research, education, and service that inspires and motivates others;
  • has the social and political acumen to build confidence and trust with higher education, elected officials, alumni, and the people of Oklahoma, the Nation, and the World;
  • can help OSU attract the public and private resources needed to carry out its mission with high effectiveness;
  • can work in partnership with the OSU Foundation and OSU Alumni Association to lead an effective comprehensive campaign;

a proven leader who

  • has a record of success in a comprehensive academic institution or an organization of similar complexity;
  • is experienced and effective in planning, setting priorities, and accomplishing goals;
  • is committed to the principles and practices of diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity at all levels;
  • has the ability to lead and manage through a process of delegation, team-building, and empowerment;
  • supports processes essential to effective decision making in higher education;
  • understands the increasing role of technology in fulfilling the mission of the University;
  • has demonstrated ability to align and execute academic and business activities consistent with the University strategy;

an effective communicator with superb interpersonal skills, exemplary integrity, and enthusiasm who

  • manifests sound ethical principles and practices and earns trust and respect;
  • can work effectively with students, faculty, staff, regents, alumni, business and community leaders, citizens, and elected officials;
  • possesses high energy, a positive attitude, emotional strength, and enthusiasm for service;
  • has a demonstrated working knowledge of fiscal management.
